The Trump administration’s return to Washington has been, as promised, a blitzkrieg of loyalists, firebrands, and norm-shattering appointments. But buried in an early 2025 State Department personnel release was one particular name that concerned both old-school GOP operatives and digital sleuths on the left: Michael Benz.
For those whose internet browsing doesn’t regularly include the murkier corners of 4chan’s /pol/ or heated Twitter exchanges about “globalist narratives,” the name probably doesn’t ring a bell. But for a decade before his attempted web history scrub and visual rebrand as a respectable statesman, Benz spent his time as a prolific and incendiary voice in the online alt-right ecosystem—a poster who shaped narratives, trolled enemies, and helped write the very digital playbook that helped bring his new boss back to power and elevated his white nationalist views from comment section detritus to international policy.
Though he may now rub elbows with powerful figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk and wrap his toxic beliefs in a suit and tie and pseudo-academic language, Benz’s efforts have only grown more odious and deadly since they were taken offline. The former forum lurker now rarely posts ragebait or argues online. Instead, he shapes policies for this administration that have already directly caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people around the world—many of those children—and are predicted to cause millions more to perish.
Placed in charge of gutting USAID by Elon Musk’s DOGE team at the start of Trump’s second term, Mike Benz immediately got to work dismantling the humanitarian agency dating back to 1961 from the inside out. By February 7th, 2025, nearly all of the 10,000 agency employees were on forced leave. By the end of that month, over 90% of the agency’s grants and contracts had been cancelled. By slashing promised aid funding, Benz and Musk left millions of desperate people around the world—often in dire straits due to other US foreign policy—without the medicine, food, and shelter donations they’d come to rely on.
As of early 2026, an online tracker maintained by Boston University epidemiologist Brooke Nichols estimated that, just one year later, the cuts had already caused the deaths of over 781,000 people, two-thirds of whom were children. Some estimates have Benz’s USAID cuts resulting in more than 14.1 million additional deaths by 2030. And as Benz (and Musk) have made it all too clear that they view non-whites as lesser-than races, it should be taken as no accident that the deaths caused by USAID are most likely to occur in Africa and Southeast Asia.
But how did a man relatively unknown outside of fringe conservative media circles even come into a position that afforded him such power over life and death?
Initially hiding his face and using the pseudonym “Frame Game,” Benz spent the leadup to Trump’s first election posting YouTube videos espousing the scientifically unfounded but alarmingly prominent and stochastic “great replacement theory.” The gist of the claims in this widely-dismissed conspiracy are that the white population in America and the rest of the Western world is being systematically replaced by non-white immigrants and “the Jews” and/or other “globalist elites” are funding it all.
And yet, the direct line between his online rhetoric and the horrors of the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville is undeniably there. The “blood and soil” and “Jews will not replace us” lines chanted by tiki torch-wielding Proud Boys and Nazis and one of their ranks plowing his car through a group of counter-protesters, killing one and hospitalizing 19, are part and parcel to espousers of Great Replacement Theory and the natural end result of Benz’s years of online mongering.
Not long after Charlottesville, during a 2018 podcast interview with a leader of one of the alt-right groups present at the rally, Identity Evropa’s Patrick Casey, Benz told his white nationalist interviewer “I’m trying to think now if I’ve ever in my life been subjected to antisemitism one time. I don’t think I’ve had one single incident in my entire life.”
This 2018 podcast chat highlights Benz’s long-simmering desire to shape the world to his will from the shadows via governance. It also hints at the long game he was already playing to grab that power. A few months later, with the help of Joshua Steinman, a fellow alt-right troll and Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Cyber, Benz would be writing speeches for Ben Carson at HUD and tech policy advisor to the President before transferring to the State Department in the final months of the lame duck administration as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Communications and Information Technology.
Following this stint, Benz rode out the Biden years with a pivot to self-appointed cyber expert, consulting with right-wing lawmakers and media on how best to combat what they deemed the “censorship industrial complex.” Again Benz was stoking the rage of others to better his own station, this time pandering to the growing antivaxxer and COVID-conspiracy theorist crowds birthed by the pandemic.
In 2022, his new area of expertise was formalized with the establishment of the Foundation for Freedom Online, his nebulous nonprofit with a tenuous grasp of 501-c3 status that pushed conservative digital agendas under the guise of being “a free speech watchdog dedicated to restoring the promise of a free and open Internet.” It was also during this year that Elon Musk first began to amplify Benz via retweets. That signal boosting would only increase in frequency and scope over the coming years.
Though his unsavory online past was exposed by the press in late 2023, the revelation did little to hinder his ascent. Benz’s non-profit venture, prior Trump admin work, and shoutouts by the richest man in the world were more than enough to thoroughly legitimize him as a Serious Person to the D.C. and media establishment. He was finally in position to get his hands on powerful levers as soon as Trump came back into power.
In December 2024, Benz went on Joe Rogan’s podcast and began talking about the pet project he’d been spreading misinformation about in recent years: USAID.
“Your brain is being tricked when you see the phrase ‘USAID.’ It’s not an aid organization,” Benz told Rogan before going on to claim the entire soft power apparatus was all a front for the CIA.
Days after Benz’s Rogan appearance, Elon Musk, who’d never once before mentioned USAID online, linked to Benz’s Rogan appearance and stated his nascent DOGE team would be throwing the program “into the wood chipper.” Soon after, Benz was appointed as a hatchet man sent to tear it all down. The rest is grim, needlessly deadly history.
Perfectly encapsulating the banality of evil is how Benz spends his time when not trying to kill non-whites through policy. He’s puttering about his cushy Miami apartment, plinking away at his keyboard, and takes his morning walks to pick up his acai bowl breakfasts. It’s a boring, simple existence, but one he’s unjustly denied to hundreds of thousands around the world and far too many more to come.
Democracy is not dying—it's being killed. And those who are killing it have names and addresses...
