Jack Hartung, Tesla Board
For the past two decades, Jack Hartung oversaw the many rises and falls of the fast-casual food chain, Chipotle. First brought on in 2002 as CFO, Hartung would also take on the concurrent positions of president and chief strategy officer in his later years at the company. The scandals he oversaw there ran the gamut from shrinking portions to foodborne illness outbreaks to staff-replacing robots.
In May of 2025, right as he announced his retirement at Chipotle, SEC filings by Tesla disclosed the company had elected Jack Hartung to its board of directors and its audit committee effective June 1st. A longtime friend of fellow board member Kimbal Musk, Hartung’s appointment was in the midst of Musk’s pay battle and synced with the launch of Tesla’s own foray into the food and beverage space with their (already-failing) Tesla Diner in Los Angeles.
As part of Tesla’s audit committee, Hartung is charged with helping to oversee the company's financial reporting, internal controls, and legal compliance. Unsurprisingly, the board was yet again embroiled in controversy soon after he joined, this time for failing to hold legally-required annual board meetings.
