Rio Tinto's critical support for Tesla
Rio Tinto is a British-Australian multinational and one of the world's largest metals and mining corporations, with a vast global portfolio producing essential materials including iron ore, aluminum, copper, and diamonds. The company is a top-tier producer of bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminum, and holds significant copper and lithium development projects. A core part of its strategy is to supply the raw materials critical for decarbonization, with a major focus on producing low-carbon aluminum and other "future-facing" commodities.
In 2022, Rio Tinto entered a multi-year agreement to supply Tesla with low-carbon primary aluminum from its Canadian hydro-powered operations, which significantly reduces the embedded carbon footprint of Tesla's vehicles and components. Additionally, through its joint venture with Talon Metals (the Tamarack project), Rio Tinto is partnered in a major future source of nickel for Tesla's batteries.
