Rusal's critical support for Tesla

Rusal fits into Tesla's supply chain as a secondary aluminum supplier for the Berlin Gigafactory, providing metal used in casting and body components for the Model Y. Tesla began purchasing millions of euros worth of aluminum from Rusal in late 2020, with the material used in production trials on new manufacturing lines at the Brandenburg plant.

The relationship has become a persistent controversy because Rusal's founder, Oleg Deripaska, is a sanctioned Russian oligarch, and later investigations have traced Rusal's raw material supply chain to Russian weapons manufacturers. Tesla has never publicly confirmed whether it continues to source from Rusal, causing many to wonder if this relationship has continued to persist in defiance of international law.
