Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla CFO
Before his current role as Tesla’s CFO, Vaibhav Taneja spent 17 years grinding at PricewaterhouseCoopers. After moving Vaibhav Taneja didn't climb the corporate ladder through Ivy League credentials or investment banking gold cards. A Delhi University commerce grad and chartered accountant from India, he put in nearly 17 unglamorous years at PwC grinding through audits and SEC filings for hundreds of clients before finally landing at SolarCity in 2016 . When Tesla ate SolarCity later that year, Taneja got swallowed into the Musk ecosystem as an assistant corporate controller—essentially the guy who makes sure the quarters close properly.
For years, he was just the quant in the room, quietly moving up from corporate controller to chief accounting officer while the likes of Zach Kirkhorn grabbed headlines as CFO. Taneja handled the boring-but-vital stuff: integrating SolarCity's books, overseeing controllership, and keeping the SEC happy . When Kirkhorn abruptly left in 2023, Musk tapped the 47-year-old numbers guy who'd been inside the machine for years..
Now Taneja sits as Tesla's CFO and has effectively become the wallet for Musk's extracurriculars. He's listed as the director for Tesla's India operations, and more tellingly, serves as treasurer and custodian of records for Musk's vanity political project, the "America Party." His $139 million payday in 2024—mostly via Tesla stock—proves he's the guy Musk trusts to handle the bag, whether it's corporate cash or political donations. Taking his cue from the board, Taneja is also quite comfortable dumping company stock when it seems advantageous.
